Flotilla Commander's Welcome
Welcome to the United States Coast Guard
Auxiliary and specifically to Division Eleven. Our "world of
work" is our oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, bays harbors and
waterways. This is the maritime domain and it is unique. The Auxiliary
has a long and distinguished history of promoting boating safety in that
domain. We have done it through class room teaching, vessel safety
examinations, safety patrols on the water and in the air, and through
numerous other means. We have prevented an unknown number of accidents
and saved a known number of victims at sea.
In recent years, the protection of our maritime domain has demanded more
of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Along with the regular Coast Guard, we
have undertaken new security missions to aid in guarding our country
from attack. We undertake security patrols, harbor protection, marine
safety programs and more. We are busy, we are effective, we are proud.
We are volunteers who serve out of love of the sea and of our country.
Welcome to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Kent Sieg, Flotilla Commander, Flotilla 24-7, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
What Is The Auxiliary?
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is chartered to
assist the Coast Guard as authorized by the Commandant. These
functions included all missions authorized
by law except military operations and
law enforcement.
With nearly 27,000
members, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary actively provides safety patrols
on area waterways and regularly meets with the boating public at marinas
and in classrooms.
We also directly assist the U.S. Coast Guard in
non-law enforcement programs such as search and rescue, and marine
environmental protection.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is America's Volunteer Life savers. The
missions of the Auxiliary include search and rescue,
aircraft operations, seamanship training, weather training, radio and
computer operations, public education instruction, aids to navigation,
vessel safety checks, support during disasters, marine safety,
environmental protection, recruiting assistance, and safety patrols.
As
the roles and responsibilities of the Coast Guard expand under the
Department of Homeland Defense, the Auxiliary is taking on more
non-traditional roles to assist the public in an ever changing world.

Operation Bay Watch
In an effort to protect the Upper Chesapeake Bay area
from terrorist activity, the Coast Guard, in cooperation with the
Federal, State and local law enforcement members of the Maryland
Maritime Security Group, has established
Operation Bay Watch This is a
“Neighborhood Watch” program for the Upper Chesapeake Bay and its
tributaries, including the Potomac River.
The
Coast Guard is requesting that citizens, boaters, professional mariners,
tourists and waterside businesses be on alert for suspicious and illegal
activity, and report such activity by phone or fax.
Of particular interest
are activities around military bases, bridges, power plants, water
intakes, oil facilities, fuel docks, and cruise ship terminals.
To report suspicious activity in the Upper Chesapeake
Bay, call (800) 418-7314. Reports will be treated as
confidential, or may be made anonymously.
If you observe suspicious activities outside of the
Upper Chesapeake Bay area, please report to the National Response Center
(NRC) at (800) 424-8802, or the local police at 911. The NRC is the central
point of contact for all oil, chemical, radiological,
and biological releases anywhere in the United States.
